Photography Question

Tracy Brewer

Starting a photography business

I have been asked to take photographs for a girl's youth softball league. There are 4 teams and they want team photos as well as individual photos. My question is, how do I do this correctly as far as a business venture? How would I do my taxes?, etc.

Just a little more information: I don't plan anytime soon doing photography full time or opening some sort of studio. But I would like to occasionally do a wedding, sports photos, family portraits at the family's home, etc. But I'm not sure about things like: Do I need to come up with a name for my business and then do I need to file that name somewhere? Is there a minimum I have to make before filing taxes? How do I go about filing my taxes (I usually do my own for my husband and I because I have a little bit of accounting background). What expenses are deductible? I am a total newbie to the business thing.

  TRACY,
I HAVE WRITTEN FOUR BOOKS THAT YOU CAN SEE ON BY GALLERY WITH FULL DISTRIPTIONS ON EBAY- ONE OF THEM TALKS ABOUT THE PROS AND CONS OF STANDING STRUCKTURE STUDIOS VS MOBILE.
I PERSONALY FIND MOBILE VERY REWARDING - WE SHOOT DIGITAL-SHOW THEM ON LAPTOPS- AND THEN PRINT ON SITE WITH EPSON R300.WE HAVE DONE SPORTING EVENTS,PET SHOPS , GROMMONG SHOPS ,RODEOS, FAIRS,WEDDINGS, FAMILY REUNIONS, CHURCHES,ECT.
IF YOU US EYOUR OWN NAME YOU WILL NOT NEED A DBA IN MOST CASES.
THE BEST THAT I WILL SUGEST ON THIS FORUM IS TO GO HAVE A TALK WITH A TAX ACCOUNTANT- LET THEM KNOW WHAT YOU PLAN AND ASK WHAT IS REQUIRED IN YOUR STATE OR COUNTRTY- DO NOT SIGN ANYTHING!! THIS IS A SERCH FOR MORE INFO.ONLY.
HOPE THIS HELPS,
DEBBY TABB( TABB PHOTOGRAPHY)
