Photography Question

Rachel Putnam

What type of paper is best for professional photos

Hi,

I am going to be taking senior pictures and wedding photos with my Canon digital Rebel XT soon. I am looking at a high quality Epson photo printer (R1800) which is a wide format high quality printer. I would like to print my own photos but I am not sure what type of paper is best for portraits, I was thinking maybe a matte, semi-matte, or luster. I am not sure if I am on the right track or not. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thank You

Rachel, the best results are usually obtained when you use the paper matching the printer. I advise Epson paper for the R1800. If you plan on printing 13" x 19", you will most likely have to order the paper. My preference is a matte or soft-gloss.

Thank You both for your responses. I really appreciate the advice. John I have a question for you, do you think it is possible to get quality results by printing my photos on this printer?

Rachel, in a word-YES. I have done a lot of research and think this is likely the best choice for a wide-carriage (13") printer. 8 color cartridges with two black will give outstanding results.

Now, remember, I am speaking from research, not experience, but this is the printer I will buy next.

Hi, Rachel. I use the Epson R300 and was amazed when I finally tried the Epson Photo Paper. I really like the Epson Premium Photo Inkjet Paper, Glossy. It has a picture of a bride and groom on the front. You can get it from Staples or Office Max. I also like the Epson Premium Luster Photo Paper which has a heavier weight to it. I just bought some from Amamzon.com.

As John R. said, try the paper from the printer's manufacturer first. Having said that, I have a Canon S-800 and, while I love Canon PhotoPro Paper, it's outrageously expensive.

I use Epson 1086 paper to make calendars because it's the only paper that allows me to print the calendar grind and write on the grid in pencil or pen. But, it's too light weight for archival use.

I love Kodak Ultima, especially the Satin finish. This paper is terrific for both color and grayscale images. it's available at super prices at Sam's Club, BJs and Costco.

My ultimate favorite, however, is Ilford and I used the Pearl finishes in preference to the glossy [too much chance of the Moire Effect.]

After all is said and done, you'll need to try a bunch of papers and decide which one you like. None of the folks who've answeded can make this decision for youy - rather we can point you in a direction.
