How to do an extraction Hi, firstly many thanks for the reponses I got. What I really am trying to do is when I take a portrait of a person I want to be able to take person out and put a new background behind. Have a great day. Trevor

You'll need to select the background and delete it. Selecting can be done with the magic wand, you'll want to be sure those 4 little boxes on the top left are set to "add to selection". Then you may want to go into quick mask mode and zoom in and touch-up the selection using a black or white brush with none or a small feather. PS won't allow you to have transparent pixels on the background layer, so rename that layer. Then just delete the background and make a new layer below to take your new background. There are a bunch of different ways to do this, this is just one example. Vince

I need and do the exact same thing with jewelry. To date, I have been using PS Quick Mask, which( sadly) takes 2-4 hours per piece to successfully separate. You have the additional problem of "hair." The Extract tool is the only program in PS capable of handling hair. Quick Mask cannot. If you'd like to see some of my "separations," visit my site, listed below, and look at the jewelry images in the Jury Services section. After I separate the pieces, I apply a custom background made with the gradient tool, then add a soft drop shadow. You can try to use Quick Mask, but if your subjects have see-thru hair, you'll need to conquer the Extract tool (which to date, I have not been able to!). Michael H. Cothran www.mhcphoto.net
