Photography Question

Susan Bohanon

How do you secure your camera and equipment?

I was thinking of purchasing one of those gadgets that will etch my name onto the underneath of the camera and equipment. I didn't know if this would be a wise thing to do or not.

Any suggestions how to identify a camera as yours?

thanks!

"Etching" your name into any commodity is not a good idea in my opinion. Why not just copy down the serial numbers? Then take a picture of each item.

Ya know? I've been a 9-1-1 dispatcher for close to .....alot of years. Tell people all the time about keeping serial #s, etc. Do I have anything recorded or photos?? I'll get around to it one day....:-)

Okay, I can write down serial numbers. Seems easy enough to do.

However, I'm ignorant about how the serial numbers will help me in the event of a theft. Can you enlighten me?

thanks!

Serial numbers are used to identify the equipment as yours should it be stolen. Should the stolen items show up at a flea market/2nd hand store/pawn shop or other market the police use the serial # to identify that the item was stolen and who the item belongs to legally. If your equipment is listed on your homeowners policy the insurance company needs the serial #s to verify that the items (1st) exist and (2nd) were stolen and/or damaged. In some states, some insurance companies cover theft even if the items are not first listed on your policy; however, as far as I know there is a dollar limit to this type of claim.
