Photography Question

Ford

My sister wants me to shoot her wedding

But until I get past the focusing problem I wont feel confident. Also Im thinking about shooting Raw because of the white balance. Its easier for me to change a light meter mistake in Raw than in Jpeg
Sorry, so many questions, but the wedding is coming up soon
Thanks Steve

What focusing problem are you talking about? Give us a few more details and maybe we can help.

HEY STEVE,
I SHOOT RAW ALL THE TIME-THIS GIVES ME THE LARGEST FILE POSSIBLE AND THIS ALLOWS MY CLIENTS TO BLOW THIER PRINTS UP TO 20X 24, 30 X 34 , ETC.
I UASALLY HAVE 2 ,1 GIG CARDS - WHEN ANY OF US MYSELF, OR THE OTHERS THAT SHOOT FOR ME, WE EACH TARGET DIFFERENT POSE LENGHTHS FULL BODY, 3/4 OR HEAD SHOTS. AND WE SHOOT AS MUCH AS WE CAN THROUGH OUT THE ENTIRE DAY.SO , I FIND IT BEST FOR ME TO GO WITH A COUPLE LARGE CARDS.
YOU WILL NEVER FEEL TOTALLY CONFIDENT ABOUT A WEDDING-EVEN AS A PRO. YOU SHOULDN'T BE ABLE TO SAY THAT- THIS IS A ONCE IN A LIFE TIME (HOPEFULLY) EVENT.AND ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN, TO ANY ONE.
BUUUUT, WE HAVE TO DO THEM ANYWAY.
EVEN IF WEDDINGS TEND TO MAKE US WORRY TILL THIER DONE.THAT ONLY SHOWS YOU CARE.
SO PRACTISE AND PRACTISE, AND LEARN ABOUT THE POSES YOU SHOULD DO( IF YOU NEED A LIST EMAIL ME AND MY NEW BOOK ON CD IS AVAILABLE NOW) AND THERE ARE BOOKS AND CDS AVAILABLE IN LOCAL STORES AND ON EBAY( GO TO CAMERAS &PHOTO AND SEARCH FOR POSING CD/ OR POSING BOOKS)
BUT YOU SHOULD DO THIS FOR HER AND WHAT A WONDERFUL EXPERIANCE , YOUR FIRST WEDDING FOR SOMEONE WHO LOVES YOU AND ALREADY KNOWS HOW TALENTED YOU ARE!! YOU WILL DO FINE.

so far I have 8gigs , thats about 800 shots in Raw. Ive read that some photographers shoot every shot till the burst, just in case of blink or funny face. 20 gigs, thats over 1500 shots. I feel sorry for whoever has to go over those photos

To avoid what I went through when I tried to do my sister's wedding, advise her to suck up the cost and hire a pro. I didn't know enough then to avoid miscalculations concerning the use of flash, and some of my focusing was off as well. Digital is especially prone to blowing out highlights; it's liking trying to do a wedding on slide film, UNLESS you are experienced in knowing how your camera and flash will respond to different lighting situations. Don't try to learn it all in three weeks. My debacle was 30 years ago, and I STILL don't like to do weddings.

  STEVEN,
THE WEDDING I USED HERE WAS THREE PHOTOGRAPHERS AND 4000 SHOTS- AND IT WAS ME WHO HAS TO EDIT, THATS WHY I'M TIED-YES LITERALY TIED TO THIS COMPUTER- THEY SLIP MY LUNCH IN FRONT OF MY FACE AND RUN!!!LOL
IT IS A CHORE BUT HEY MY LIFE IS MADE UP OF PRETTY PICTURES AND COLORS- CAN'T DUE MUCH BETTER THEN THAT.
BUT , MY EYES SURE ARE SORE.
BUT YES WE TAKE THE SAME SHOT OF THE FORMALS ABOUT THREE TIMES- IF IT CONSISTS OF MORE THEN JUST THE COUPLE, AND FROM DIFFERENT ANGLES.
YOU'RE GONNA HAVE A BLAST!!

  Steven,
Read this thread, for an example of why many photographers will give the same advice that Doug does.

I agree with Doug. I will shoot just about anything but I really don't like to shoot weddings!

Steven, what a great opportunity to advance your skills! We're talking your sister here - go ahead and take command of that wedding with your camera!!

Couple of things:
First, if your using a digital SLR, the meter in the camera should be up to the job. Trust it - Bryan Peterson does, so can you.

Secondly, you should shoot the wedding in jpeg and forget RAW. Leave RAW for a handful of creative shots you know you'll be running through PS - such as a portraits you may want to convert to 'painterly' or sepia. Jpeg (large/fine) will be just fine for all the other shots and you'll get all the in-camera processing your SLR was built for. There are many more reasons to shoot jpeg - the quantity of shots you mentioned is one of them.

Third, conscript an assistant. Perhaps another family member or a friend who has an eye for detail, such as hand positioning, flower arrangement and other things. This will take the stress off you and you'll be able to blame someone else if the shots don't turn out (just kidding).

While I mostly agree with the wedding disaster threads i.e., these should be avoided if possible, we're talking family here and the expectations are very different. Your lack of confidence now is a good thing as you want to work out concerns beforehand and not on the day of.

I say dive in Steve, you won't regret one bit and it will be something you and your sister will talk fondly of for years to come.

THANK YOU RICK FOR CHIMING IN SO POSSITIVELY!!!
STEVE, I HOPE YOU'LL LISTEN TO US AND TAKE THE OPPERTUINY TO MAKE UP YOUR OWN MIND, ABOUT WEATHER TO EVER SHOOT ANOTHER WEDDING.
AS I SAID I'LL SEND YOU POSING LISTS IF YOU NEED AND USE THOSE AS FAMILY POSES AND PRACTISE.
IF YOU TAKE ON THIS ROLL- IT WILL MAKE THIS ALL THE MORE PERSONAL FOR YOU AND YOUR SISTER- I MUST SAY, EVERY WEDDING WE SHOOT, WE MAKE OURSELVES AT HOME AND MAKE FRIENDS WE'VE TAKEN WITH US-WEDDINGS CAN BE WARM THAT WAY.
BUT , I THINK MOST THINGS ARE WHAT WE OURSELVES MAKE OF THEM.
BEST OF LUCK, KEEP US UP TO DATE AND POST SOME OF YOUR PRACTISE SHOT IF YOU'D FEEL BETTER GETTING FEEDBACK.
WISHING YOU A LIFETIME OF SMILES,

I have agreed to have a second shooter on the grassy knoll, and we have different styles so it should be fun. Besides, I have to be in some of those shots. Will post pics after wedding. No time to upload pics for gallery for now
