Studio lighting -- where to begin?? I have been doing outdoor digital photography for a while and am interested in getting a small in-home studio set up. I currently use a Canon Digital Rebel and am wondering what kind of lighting I can use with this camera, if I should get strobe or continuous (remember, I am just a beginner at this whole lighting thing), and what specific products of each I should be looking at. Thanks for your help!

Hi Brianne, love your gallery. I wish I could help but I am responding because just like you I would like to get a in home studio set up. I also have the Canon Rebel XT along with the new 430EX speedlite. I want to buy lights but the information out there is just so overwhelming. I have read soooo much and I still don't know what to buy. How do I know what lights will work with my camera, how many lights, what kind, umbrella or softbox, what's the difference, or both. Then what brand do I get? Maybe by bringing this thread back up we'll get some answers. Good luck.

I highly recommend Charlie Borlands Studio Lighting Course taught online here at Better Photo. I took it and gained a good understanding of what to buy, and feel I gained an excellent foundation. Many of us bought equipment (strobes, stands, filters, etc) from the Paul Buff companies (White Lightning-more pro, or Alien Bees) who have great customer service. Now, I am looking into using multiple Nikon Speedlight SB800s for more portability, but you will always use the lighting equipment you have in a good studio setup, which Charlie teaches all about, as well as how to use the equipment, as well as getting feedback on your lighting technique.

Don't you need to have the lighting and all the other equipment for the course? That's my problem, I need a what to buy course first! Wish they had that here!

Hi Barbara, Yes, you do want it on hand... if you are planning on taking Charlie Borland's course, I bet if you email him, he would tell you what you need. He has a 'recommended' list already made up that he sent out ahead of the course start. At that time, he was even able to get a class participant discount on lighting equipment from White Lightning... their stuff is excellent. Try emailing Charlie, or (I haven't checked) he might have that info under the FAQ in his course listings...

Hi Brianne, Great, great work! I juts purchased the four-light kit from Steve Kaeser off of Ebay. He was more than willing to make sure my order was perfect. It was a great deal with a total of 930 w/s for only $799. I am really happy witht he set, but it's taking a long time for me to get things right. Cyndee ><>
