Photography Question

Why are self-taught photographers more artisitic?

My guess would be,

They don't realize the machanics and shoot hundreds of photos and in the process learn what is right. Bracketing and Bracketing and writing down the settiings. Now because of digital the larning curve goes way up. My assistant, just started shooting with me (6 weddings) is already good enough to go on her own. When she started seeing and croping on the computer, she learned quickly what looked artistc.

OK boy and girls - tear it up

I DO BELIVE THAT IS EXACTLY IT!!
WHEN I STARTED, I BOUGHT A CAMERA,THEN STUFF, AND MORE STUFF-I LEARNED HOW TO DO THINGS WITH ALL "MY STUFF" BY SEEING SOMETHING IN A PHOTO MAGAZINE AND COPYING THE SETTINGS,I HAD A BEAUTIFUL LITTLE GIRL AND SO I TOOK HER ON OUTINGS WITH A DOZEN OUTFITS AND JUST SHOT, AND SHOT... AND THAT WAS FILM!!! NOW WITH DIGITAL IT IS SO MUCH QUICKER.
AS I GOT INTO STUDIO PHOTOGRAPHY AND WENT TO WORK FOR A MAJOR COMPANY-I WOULD FIND MYSELF ALONE IN THE STUDIO BOARED STIFF-SO I STARTED MESSING WITH TEDDY BEARS AND LIGHTING, THEN IF A HUMAN SHOWED UP-OH MY , I HAD A BLAST,TRYING WHAT LOOKED GOOD ON THE BEARS. BUT ,THIS TRAIL AND ERROR TAUGHT ME TO PUSH THE ENEVELOP,REACH FOR WHAT WAS IN MY MINDS EYE.
HOWEVER,AS MUCH AS A ASSET AS I WAS TO THAT COMPANY-I WAS ALSO A PILL-THE SMALLER THIER STUDIOS GOT THE MORE I MICKY MOUSED THIER EQUIPTMENT TO DO AS I WANTED AND GET THE LIGHTING EFFECTS I WANTED TO GET-I DON'T KNOW HOW MANY TIMES I HEARD :"YOU CAN'T DO THAT"- ONLY TO HAVE THE DM OR PRESIDENT OF OPERATIONS COME IN TO FIND OUT" YES I COULD." I TAUGHT FOR THEM FOR YEARS , BUT SOONER OR LATER IF THE COMPANY DOES'T UNDERSTAND OR GIVE YOU ROOM TO GROW- THEN YOU GROW RIGHT OUT OF YOUR POSSION- WHEN YOU DON'T KNOW "I CAN'T" OR "YOU SHOULDN'T BE DOING IT THAT WAY" YOUR TALENT AND CREATIVITY SOAR.
SO, I TEACH POSING CLASSES AND HAVE WRITTEN 4 BOOKS ON POSING AND I TELL PEOPLE ALL THE TIME-IF YOU SEE IT FIND A WAY, DON'T STOP,FIND A WAY TO TRY AND GET YOUR SHOT-THEY WON'T TRULY BE HAPPY WITH THEM SELVES IF THEY DON'T.
BESIDES MY EXPERIANCE IS-IT'S A PAIN TO GET A IDEA FOR A SHOT-I DON'T SLEEP UNTIL I'VE EXHUSTED MY ATTEMPS-GOOFY HUH.
WISHING YOU A LIFE TIME OF SMILES.

  Debby,
A marvelous composition . . . much, much more than a "straight portrait."

School, classes, formal study, whatever you call it doesn't teach creativity. It teaches technique . . . the "science" of it . . . cause and effect. The creativity is in the mind and it's how the tools are used.

Yes, "No Name" is using a new name. Sometimes I believe he'd make a magnificent professional lake bass fisherman going from competition to competition raking in the really big bucks. Seems to be an unparalleled expert at trolling and needs to leverage on that deep skill.

Speaking of fishing, just went out on Monday and caught a nice Ahi which sold for almost $4,000. My friends boat so he got most of it, upkeep on a boat is insane. Got some lobster too which we couldn't bear to sell...yummm

I didn't know you could catch Ahi and lobster in Orange County.

I learn something new every day.

Love to see a picture of that great catch! (I'm a bit of an angler myself).

Be sure to include the sky in the photo. Many of us here would like to see if the sky is blue in your little world.

About that Ahi selling for 4,000$, bullshit. Well Chris you learn something new everyday(wink wink!)! I didn't know you had an assistant Justin(What it)! You know what, we should contact the Betterphoto managment, and see if they can shut down some of Justins' fake accounts.
