Read a review of the istD at luminous-landscape.com, and another one by digging in luminous-landscape for Robert Johnston's article on the istD. The camera is very small for an SLR, and reportedly has a bright viewfinder. The luminous-landscape article by site owner Michael notwithstanding, I doubt that the istD's ergonomics are any worse than most digital cameras. A real benefit may be that the older Pentax K-mount lenses can be used, saving you big bucks on superwide lenses. I don't know whether you have metering capability with the old manual focus lenses. If so, it puts the istD in the running for me.

Doug: The camera that I mentioned is the third in the Pentax line.

The *istD was the first. Then, the *istDs. And soon, the more affordable *ist DL.

And yes, all maintain light metering (Center Weighted only) with manual focus K-mount lenses. That is a real bonus for many people.

Program modes do not work with manual focus lenses, but Aperture Priority semi-automatic does, and that's a great alternative.

i just bought one and so far the color on my old fujifinepix 500 3.1 megapixel is better. I really wanted to like it since I grew up with the K1000
this is my first dslr-should I return it?

Pam: Describe what you mean by the color rendition not being what you expected.

Are the colors flat and dull?

Are they too vibrant?

Also, which specific model camera did you buy?

I have tested all of the Pentax *ist models and they are great! Perhaps I can provide a suggestion that will make you more satisfied.

Just provide a bit more specifics.

Another specific - don't let it get wet! Specific warranty exclusions for any water damage. Realistically, that may well include humid areas and seashores. I am seeing a rapidly increasing number of angry complaints from DSLR owners of varying brands who swear they did not allow their DSLRs to be exposed to actual rain or moisture, but when returned for malfunction the manufacturer found 'water damage' to the electronics or sensor and denied free warranty repair. Whoever is right, it's something to keep an eye on.

ok, have experimented a bit more; the colors are often purplish and flat. I had the photos developed at a film store to rule out printer, monitor and LCD issues. I use the camera mostly, when outside on the "p" setting and automatic white balance-have experientented with the different WB, with not a lot of success.
also, the pics are sometimes a bit blurry.
the guy at the camera store (a nice small place I can go back to for help)said he thought this was a great camera.
help!

Did you print your own and compare with those you had printed at the store? You can change colour settings in the camera menu (saturation, for example). Also, check that the colour-space in the menu is set to 'sRGB' and NOT Adobe RGB. If it's already set to sGRB, change it to Adobe RGB and see if there's any improvement. Get on to a forum which caters for specific makes, models of camera and ask what settings they use and if they have the same problem. A few suggestions for forums which have a Pentax user's forum:
