Photography Question

Joanna M. Paynter

Where to get further training?

I was wondering if some people could suggest some places and courses to take in order to expand my photography knowledge.

I realize there are courses here that I can take online but I am wondering about going to school for photography....

I have just returned from the mission field and so I currently have all the time in the world...so that's not a factor...and I'm not too concerned about money..as long as it's reasonable

or I would love to work under someone learning from them...does anyone have any suggestions on how I could go about this...

I just am not sure where to start...

Thanks in advance

joey

Joey, I don't know what you are wanting to learn but you might want to check out some of the courses here at BP. If you got the shots in your gallery by pure dumb luck you are the luckiest guy in the world but I doubt that. You already have an excellent eye from the looks of the beautiful photos you have posted. You definitely don't need any beginner courses. See what BP has to offer.

  thanks for those suggestions...

I thought I would try and be a bit more specific

I am almost 27, I graduated from James Madison University in 2000 with a degree in Psychology and Religion. In 2001 I moved to Australia and became involved with missions for four years.

I just recently moved back to the states and I have been thinking that I would really like to pursue photography. I know that it's a hard field to break into, but I really want to give it a go. I really want to look into something regarding photojournalism ...I just haven't been sure if I look into a small training school...or go for three years or take lots of courses on line...

I am at a point where I really want to go for this and I think if I don't try I am always going to wonder.

I have never had any formal training...I just see things and I want to capture them..especially people from other cultures...

Is there anyone that has done this before or know of any schools that I should go to...

thanks

joey

  Joey,
I am going to play devil’s advocate. HOW BAD DO YOU WANT TO BE A PHOTOGRAPHER? I did say that kind of loud didn’t I.
If you want to be professional photographer. Than please, consider moving to Austin, Texas and enrolling in the Austin Community College’s Department of Photographic Technology. You can check them out on line. . (http://www.austin.cc.tx.us/photo/) I know both of the models who are former students at the school.
You will have shooting classes every semester, and with each class you will be taking a lab. Each one of the instructors has a lab time that they teach. If you are taking Fashion and the lab instructor is teaching Macro, he will still answer your questions and help you in any way possible. All the instructors either are former studio photographers or are teaching while running a full time studio.
The prevailing atmosphere at ACC is they are there to help you learn. It doesn’t make any difference whose course you are taking. Many of the students in their second year will be willing to help you. Then you find us old fossils who are taking courses because we want to learn something we don’t know, like a Macro or Advanced techniques in PhotoShop. ACC still has a few wet labs for black and white but they are now 100% digital. It is one of the finest schools for photographer in the nation and many of the serious student go on to Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara to get their four year degree and even a masters.
Another way to go is to go to like Texas School, a whole week in College Station, Texas put on the Texas Professional Photographers Association, (www.tppa.org) where you spend the week with an instructor who will take you from beginner to the door way of advanced. Again you have students, wranglers and the instructor to help you. It’s a fun time and you can not image how much you learn in such a short period of time. Finally, if there are community colleges in your area please go check them out, and don’t forget the library is your friend. If they don’t have the book you want, ask if they can get it through inter-library loan. It cost a few buck but it is well worth the investment.

I hope these ideas are helpful.

Yeah Doug thanks that was very helpful...
I have talked with a few schools...the hallmark institute of photography as well as the Brooks Institute.

I am leaning towards doing the three year program focusing on photojournalism at the brooks institute for photography...

I have heard it is intense...but I am very up for that.

anyone on this site gone to the brooks Institute for Photography?

thanks to all who answer

joey

I went there. Great school then and now. Art Center in Pasadena also a top school and Hallmark also looks impressive. Cheaper schools are the Art Institutes, Colorado Mountain College, and other community colleges.
