Candid Shots in a Public Location

Hello. Encountered a problem taking pictures at Disney World that I thought I would ask your opinions on. When I tried to take a picture of one of the Disney characters, I was basically accosted by a Disney employee that told me I could not take a picture without the parent's consent because at the time the character was posing for pictures with kids. Took several pictures of kids with characters throughout the day and this was the only time I was approached. Was this specific employee correct in what they said to me? I thought I only needed consent if I was going to publish the photo. Thanks in advance. Nevia

He was correct, Taking photo's of children in any situation without a parent(s) permission is a no-no, There are far to many creeps out there today that warrant these restrictions. It dosn't matter if it's published or not.

Legally, he would be wrong if it was a public place. However, Disney World is not a public placed. It is owned by the Disney Corp. and they can make any restrictions they want. As a matter of common courtesy, I would ask the parents' permission, give them a business card, and offer to send them a copy of the print if they wanted one. I understand Disney's concern. As Daniel said, there are too many creeps out there and Disney does what they can to protect children. It is sad that the few creeps make life difficult for innocent people like you.

Thanks for your input. I agree that it is a great idea because there are far too many creeps out there. The only problem I have is that I was not interested in a photo of the kids at all, only the character and there never was a time where the characters were not posing with a child. No biggie. Disney is supposed to be for the kids anyway though I lost count of the number of kids that were pleading to go back to the hotel so they could swim in the pool. :) Thanks again. Nevia
