RAW files in PS & PSP

I would like to stop using multi-programs. I shoot in the RAW format and have been converting the images in the Nikon View program. I have downloaded a copy of Photo Shop CS2 and Paint Shop Pro 9 as demos. Both will directly import the RAW images from the camera (D100. The main problem is that both programs are far from the sharpness I get with Nikon View. I tried the sharpening in both programs and it was better except the grain started showing up. Am I missing something?

You probably are missing something, although we probably will never know what exactly. RAW files do need to be sharpened, as they have NO in-camera enhancements done to them. Sharpening is a technique that requires exact control - too much will ruin the image, and too little will do nothing.
For sharpening in PS, use the Unsharp Mask, and apply it after you have done all the editing and sizing. Yes, the name is misleading, but it really does sharpen your image. It is a technique and term borrowed from large format film printers.
Always do your editing from your largest file, and then size down. Start with about 250%/1.2/2 settings. Each time you resize from this file, add about 50% UM.

Thank you Michael
I spent the yesterday and a fair part of today playing with your suggestions. Yes they do work. The something missing was Nikon has a built in focus program within the camera which was set to auto and is again. I have enclosed 3 images. One is the full frame at normal size. One is an image is blown up to 26"X40" with Nikon auto focus option. The third is the same image after working with your suggestions.
Thanks again.
