recharging batteries

can I recharge my camera batteries in Europe? Is an adaptor sufficient? I was looking at converters and they mostly stated not to use over 3 hours max. My charger takes 4-6 hrs to charge. So I am just taking a lot of batteries with me.
Also-are european batteries the same as american batteries?
Thanks in advance.

Batteries are the same, world-wide. However, the electricity from wall outlets is not. In the US the standard is alternating current at 110 volts at 60 cycles per second, but in Europe it is 220 volts at 50 cycles per second. You cannot use your recharger without a transformer.

Some chargers are capable of handling 220 volts. I bought a charger in the US last year, because it specified this capability. I use it frequently here in France. Check the specifications - it shouldn't be too hard to find one like that. HOWEVER you'll then need the plug adapter, because the US two prong plugs don't fit anywhere (I think) in Europe. You can buy univeral adapter kits in airports, and by mail-order. If you plan on traveling over here more than just this time, its a must-buy...

Hope this helps!

Christian
