Studio Work

Hi all, I would love some feedback on my first Studio practice. I am really happy with the results, I've never done studio photos before, and I am amazed at how 3D my photos look. Although I have downloaded them to this website and they have lost some of their sharpness - maybe I resized it wrong?

  Hello Natalie.
I had a look in your gallery but cannot find what I would consider an example of studio/lighting work. If you mean the collage of headshots it may be an idea to resubmit the shots individually as the small ones do not give enough information.
Regards
Gary.

  Hi Gary

Yes it was the headshots, and also the single shot of my son looking to his right. I will bring in some more that aren't cropped so much. But that will have to be tomorrow. What do you think of what is there anyway?

I used a 420EX flash with infrared signal, bounced it off the ceiling, it was to the left of me, also window light, black backdrop.

ISO400
1/200 (flash sync speed)
f7.1 - f8

  Natalie,
I checked out your contact sheet of your son. Wow, what a great subject. Your lighting is great for capturing his energy. You have a nice feel for lighting ratios. You did well putting your lights high enough to put catch lights in his eyes. I like you balance of light and shadow.
I am going to be presumptuous that you have checked books out from the library and study lighting ratios. If you have not read “Lighting by Tony Cobell’ please take the time. Also, check out any books by Frank Cricciho, or Don Blair. They are exellent. If you can take a course from Tony or Frank please do so, these guys are fun, and you will learn a ton. Don Blair passed away last fall, but he lives in his books.
I hope this information is helpful and good shooing.
Doug

  Hi Doug

Thanks for your reply, I am really happy that others can see the quality in the work too! (not trying to big note myself - much...LOL) But I am just so happy with how they turned out, and I look at these photos compared to things I was doing a year ago and you can see the difference.

No I haven't studied lighting rations or even studio photography for that matter. This is my first attempt, with no lessons or study of studio lighting at all. I am going to tafe tonight, and we were going to have our first "muck" around with the equipment there.

These photos were just taken in my dinning room, with the backdrop hanging over my kitchen bench taped down.

Do you think they are sharp though? They just feel like they have lost some sharpness since downloading them to this site.

  Natalie,
I think your shots are wonderful. I to am just experimenting with studio work. If you have the time I would appreciate you looking at mine. Of course they are the newest ones in my gallery. I however, think I will return the light brown back drop because it just seems like it comes out to light for some reason. I like the black better, what do you think? The brown back drop was 118.00 and the black sheet was from Wal-mart for 7.00 lol.
But I think you have every right to be proud of your work. It looks great.
