Pricing for child portraits? My friends have been asking to pay me to take their children's photos for a while now, but since I've been shooting with a simple p&s camera, I said that I just couldn't accept money. Well, I just got the Rebel XT and couldn't be more excited! Soo...no more excuses - and my friends are ready to pay me. I feel silly asking this with all of the pros out there, but where do I start? I was thinking of just doing an informal photo shoot (with no sitting fee), and then charging a print price that is higher than what I'll pay from an online service. But how much more? For example, if I can order an 8 by 10 for $5, do I charge $15, etc.? They want something with more personality than the local Target studio, which I feel like I can give, but I obviously cannot compete with a $6.99 price for a gazillion prints. I'd love to build a photography business someday, but don't know where to go from here? Any advice is welcome, as I'm a beginner! :) Stacy

By the way, when I say child, I really mean infant/toddler. They are all under 3 yrs. old.

$15.00 is not unreasonable.

I don't think you should "charge" them anything, since they are friends and you are not a professional. If they offer, let them pay for the film and the developing. Maybe they are the kind of friends who will pick up a gift certicicate to the photo place, or a restaurant for you. If I were you, when you get the prints back, pick out the one you think is the best and stick it in a simple frame with your business card taped to the back, for them to put on their desk at work. This way you'll have gotten yourself some experience, with the possibility of inquiries from their coworkers.
