Photography Question

Andrew Laverghetta

Looking for a better film camera.

Hi! First of all, I wanted to share that I found a really cool camera in my parents house tonight, just a few hours ago. It's really old and I believe the correct name would be an Ansco Memar with an Agfa Color-Apotar 1:2.8-45 Pronto lens. It's in a leather case and is completely manual without a meter. I found the manual online and it gives suggested settings for different lighting conditions that I find really interesting and the settings correspond more to what kind of their own film you are using and not ASA/ISO. I'm going to start messing with it more tomorrow with some film. It should be fun!

Anyway, I'm taking a darkroom photography class fall semester and I'm looking for a new film camera. I have a Canon EOS Rebel GII right now and I'm looking for something a little better. I've found some cameras online that I kind of like. Actually just one. Canon EOS A2E/A2. Is this also known as the EOS 5? The price for most of these is around $100-$200 and it seems like a pretty good camera provided I get one that functions properly. Has anybody used one of these before? I would buy something like a newer Elan but the price is out of my range as I just bought a 20D, "L" lens, and want to get a large aperture zoom Sigma lens soon, maybe some studio lighting as well so I'm looking to get something a little older that's still good.

The camera looks like it has a large shutter speed range (1/8000-30sec) and will meter light down to EV 0 I think. Anyways, what do you think?

Thanks!

  I've no info on the older camera.
Re - A2/A2E, there's a good overview/review at http://emedia.leeward.hawaii.edu/frary/canon_eos_a2.htm. The EOS 5 is the same as the A2E, but with a better in-viewfinder exposure scale.

In virtually all respects the A2/A2E is a better camera than the Elan II/IIe or Elan 7/7e except for a couple very minor things:
(1) The A2E's eye control focus works only in horizontal orientation;
(2) wrt flash, it is not E-TTL and no FP high speed flash sync, but otherwise fully compatible with E-, EZ-, and EX-series speedlights;
(3) The mode select dial is a little less robust - prone to break if care is not taken to press the center lock button before turning it.
