reflection in mirror

I would like to know what equipment is needed & what lighting technique to use to take portraits with a mirrored reflection. These are typically Senior portraits. I was told that some photographers use a thick plexiglass but was not sure if this is adequate. If a mirror is used how do you stop the flash from reflecting? Thank you for your help.

  Kathy,
Good question, just remember the angle of incident equal to the angle of reflection. What that means if you shoot directly at a mirror, glass window, marble or any place that has highly reflective walls or surfaces, with a flash the light will reflect back to its source. A good case we have all seen is “red eye.” When the light from your flash goes into the eyes and bounces off the retina of the eye and the result is “red eye.” If you have a point & shoot, it will be very difficult to get rid of this problem. The flash is only an inch above the lens.
Your solution is to set your flash off to the side, so that it bounces out of the mirror at a different angle. You can use a bounce flash off the ceiling or a corner of the room.
Here are a couple of ideas that you might consider. Use a reflector. A good one is the Chameleon. You can use a piece of white foam core, or make one with foam core on one side and dull aluminum foil on the other or paint is with a dull silver paint. Use a north light window and the reflector. Look for areas where the sun can bounce off a neutral object that will add light. One last hit. If the mirror is a hanging one, you can put something behind the frame to reflect the light away from your subject. I some times use a roll of gaffers tape, or a one of the large pink school erasers.
I hope these ideas and information will be helpful.
Doug

Think she's talking about the reflection of the senior on top, reflection below, low angle shot. Same you see with the mountain and reflection in a lake.
