Photography Question

Professional Digital Prints

I am wondering how many of you use a professional service for your digital prints and which one do you use? I tried using MPIX but when I upload my pictures and proceed to order 8 x 10 prints they are cropped so much that much of the image is lost. I don't have any control over the cropping. I checked their forum but there is so much jargon about image aspect ratios that I am lost. All I want is to get an 8 x 10 picture that includes all of my image. Any suggestions?

Andrea - you might not like this answer, but the fact is that you simply can't get an 8x10 that includes all of your image.

The Digital Rebel, like many other digital SLRs, and all 35mm cameras, produces images that are a 2:3 size ratio. You can print a 4x6 with no cropping. An 8x10 is a 4:5 or 2:2.5 ratio.

If you want an 8x10, you can use an image editor to crop the image to an 8x10 ratio before uploading it. That gives you more control than doing it on the web interface.

If you want an enlargement without losing any of the image, MPIX offers an 8x12.

BTW, I really like you image of the church.

I love MPix and the 8 x 12 size. However, it depends I guess on what you are printing and if someone wants to spend the money for matting and framing. I have found that my 6x9 can be printed with everything included also which still doesn't help when it comes to a standard framing size, but they matte and frame nice in a 9 x 12. It took me a long time to realize how the aspect ratios work. Do you have an editing program like Photoshop or anything? The only other option would be to make sure when taking your photos to give yourself room for that cropping that will automatically take place when you know you will want an 8 x 10 size! That is very hard for me to do!
