Getting better low light/action photos...

I have been taking pictures for bands for about a year now useing a flash and that has been working great but my flash is really to bright so I tried not useing my flah and setting the shutter speed to 30 and buying 800 speed film... but that didnt work AT ALL the pics were to dark/blurry sometimes so dark you cant even tell who it is in the picture and half the roll didnt even come out. Please help I really dont know what to do anymore.

Is your flash too bright or too harsh? If its too bright then it sounds like you have an exposure problem. If its too harsh then I would suggest diffusing it somehow. A bounce attachment or small softbox works great to soften and spread out the light. If your problem is the people are coming out bright and everything else is too dark then you need to drag your shutter. Dragging your shutter means to use a slow enough shutter speed to allow the ambient light to record on the film while having the flash freeze the action and light your subject. You just have to be careful about camera movement with this or you will get ghosting of your subjects. Let me know if you want more details on how to do all this.
