Photography Question

switching from P mode to M mode

I have recently bought MAxxum 5 ( minolta). there are certain queries regarding the use of this camera. When I use "P" mode and focus it to certain object it automatically sets the shutter speed and aperture and the cursor on the Ev scale comes to "zero".

But when I use the "M" mode and focus at the same abject and feed the same values of shutter speed and aperture (previously displayed in "P" mode) the cursor on the Ev scale move far away to the under exposed side.

For a typical example, when for a partcular object the set value of shutter speed and aperture is 125 and 5.6 respectively in "P" mode, I need to use 0.5 and 5.6 to bring the cursor on the Ev scale at "zero". Why is so discrepency..??????? It happens too even if I use the " S" mode or "A" mode.

This is most likely caused by the different metering patterns that each of the modes uses. I don't know the details of your camera, but I would guess that the P mode is probably using an evaluative metering of the whole scene, and the M mode is using spot metering of an area closer around the main focus point.

If the main focus point that is being spot metered is darker or lighter than medium gray, it will affect your exposure.
