Shutter Speeds - On my HP 935 camear

I have a HP Photosmart 935 and have been a little confused with the shutter speeds lately.

I have been trying to take some pictures of a golf swing but having diffuculty. When I switch to action mode I do not notice an obvious difference. What does action mode actually do?

Also, when I view the info about the shot it says like 1/120s for the shot when I'm sure it took about 1.5s. Why is this.

Also, when I look of the details of my camera for the shutter speed it says:
1/2000 + 15s. I have never got close to either of these extremes. Can I set them, or what conditions would require the 15s and how could I get close to the 1/2000 of a second?

Finally, I read about how if you push the shutter button halfway down, it says this locks the exposure and focus. How does this help? Does it make the shutter speed any faster.

I hope I have not bombarded you with too many questions here, any help would be appreciated, you don't need to answer them all.

Thanks
p.s I would also like anyone to comment on the 4 pictures in my gallery, I know their probably rubbish so all constructive criticism is welcome.

There are 2 concepts you bring up. Shutter lag is the time between pressing the shutter button and the shutter actually opening. Digital P&S cameras are notorious for long lag times of up to 1.5 seconds. What the camera does during this time is autofocus and clear the sensor buffer (determining the exposure is almost instantaneous). Half-press and hold helps to make the camera ready to trip the shutter immediately when you fully press the shutter button.

Re the actual shutter speed, the Action mode should choose the fastest shutter speed available. However, the camera is limited by the maximum lens aperture (f/2-4.8), and probably tends to stay at ISO 100 to keep the "noise" down. If you want faster shutter speeds, shoot in Av mode and set the widest aperture (smallest f-number) available and set the ISO to 200 or 400.

Thanks Jon,

after learning how to set the shutter speed I took some pictures of a golf swing that I was really pleased with.

Just wondering, apart from whether you use flash, aperture, exposure e.t.c is the main factor of shutter speed the available light?

  Hi Sam,
Apart from the techinical things, you asked for. (I hope so, you got answers from Jon).

I looked those pictures in your gallary. They are Nice.

Macro-flower, Blueness are really good. The pictures of statue, I donot know why did you make it very much centre, It would have got pleasing effect, if you would have placed in off-centre.
But still nice pictures...!

Keep it up. Post some more about that "golf swing" pictures too.

With Regards,
Siddhun.M.Karthik

  hi,
I have the hp 945 and if it should be somewhat similiar. On mine if I have it in action mode when I look thru the view finder the subject keeps moving when you push the shutter 1/2 way down, kinda like a video. In the reg. modes the camera locks on the subject and waits for you to shoot. By then the subject may be out of the frame. There is hardly any shutter lag in the action mode. IMHO. Hope this helps.
