Photography Question

Having Probs with my Fill Flash

I have a Nikon N80, and a SB-600
I was shooting skateboarding on an overcast day with no shadows I set my flash for BL-TTL (which is supposed to be the fill flash because it measures the Background Light to make a correct exposure of the subject) and the flash fired on every shot and apparently my subject came out very dark... i'm getting very frustrated at this I love shooting but it just keeps working against me. I don't know how it happened. It was developed at a darkroom in school so I can't upload a shot... but thanks to whoever replies.

  A couple things to check...
TTL-BL is automatic fill-flash. You do not need to dial in negative flash exposure compensation. Make sure you haven't set -FEC on the camera or the speedlight.

What was the subject to flash distance, lens aperture, and film ISO? It's possible your subject was beyond the usable range of the speedlight.

The speedlight's guide number divided by the aperture value gives the maximum usable range for the flash. The GN for the SB-600 ranges from 98 to 138 ft, depending on zoom setting. Max distance = GN * sqrt(ISO/100) / aperture. At ISO 125 and at f/16 that gives a maximum usable flash to subject range of just 6.8 ft to 9.6 ft.

"-FEC" is negative Flash Exposure Compensation, a setting that you want less than full exposure from the flash.

I found the guide number in the user manual. The manual also has a chart giving the flash's usable range in TTL mode for various ISO and aperture settings. If you don't have it, it can be downloaded free from http://www.nikon.com.sg/ (click on "Tech Support").
The guide number is also a standard item given in the spec list in the description at , retailer's listings and ads.
