Best lens to use for sporting events

I currently own a Canon Digital Rebel 300D, and would like to know what is the best lens to buy for taking sport/rodeo pictures, both inside and out. I need to be able to zoom in close enough to things even though I may not be able to get into the arenas.

  Hey Robin

I thought I would respond to your lens question. I too shoot Rodeo with a Canon 300D. I bought the Sigma 70-200 F2.8 which I have had excellent results with. I have some shots in my gallery if you would like to take a look. Its a nice lens and compared to the NICER lenses made by Canon it does nice work. I personally couldnt afford THOUSANDS of dollars for a Canon . Good luck and look forward to seeing some of your work .

I agree with Sharon, I have also purchased the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 lens to shoot sports, especially rodeos, eventhough I haven't shot any rodeo events yet. I did shoot some action photos and they came out excellent. I also purchased the 1.4 lens converter
that I hope to used when I go to Texas and shoot rodeos.

Thank you for you response. That helps me tremendously for future buys.

I have a few more questions, is Sigma lens better than Tamron lens and if I can't spend that kind of $ for the 70-200 f/2.8 lens for now, what would get me by until then, would a 70-300mm telephoto do?

I cant really say that one is better than the other cause I have owned both. I had good results with the TAmron but it was a long time ago, about 12 years ago. I am sure they have probably improved and upgraded their line.

As for the second question I used a 75-300 4 5.6 for a number of years until I was able to afford this f2.8. I got excellent results from it also. I had difficulties shooting at night tho. With extremely dark arenas it can be hard unless you can get up close.

I also used a 2x converter alot , that was a big help in daylight but a drawback in the dark.

Good luck !

  Sharon,

Thanks again for the fast response, they have a great deal on a Sigma lens with actually 2 lens in the sale, one of which is the 70-300mm F4.5-6.7 and a 28-80mm F3.5-5.6 for like $160.00. Does that sound like a good deal?

Can you use a 2x converter when shooting sports and did they come out OK as far as clarity?

Thanks again.

Yes I believe it would work fine until you can get the f2.8. Sounds like a good deal, Make sure you try these lenses on your rebel before you buy them if possible, just to make sure there arent any problems. I used a 2x with my 75-300, and got really nice shots, but remember it decreases your light because of the extra glass, so you have to compensate for that in your shutter speeds and FStops. That why I said in Daylight I did real well but at night or low lit arenas it will be harder to get good shots.

  Robyn,

For indoor sporting events, I would definitely recommend a 70-200 2.8 lens. The 2.8 will enable you to use a faster shutter speed necessary to stop action. If you can afford a 2.8 lens, a 70-300 mm 3.5-5.6 would work fine if you use a flash for indoor sports. Also, be very careful when using a teleconvertor with a 70-300 3.5-5.6 lens because you will probably lose 2 f/stops. That means you will have to shoot at a slower shutter speed. I shoot arena football and mainly use only 2.8 lenses, but I have used a 5.6 lens with flash and got good results. If you are going with a teleconvertor, I would recommend a 1.4 since you would only lose 1 stop and the clarity should be a little better.

Good Luck,

Steve
