Hi Steve; I am not an expert on this topic but I do travel a lot, mostly by car, and have visited the Badlands and Black Hills on multiple occasions. August temperatures can be quite high in both places. The biggest enemy to film is heat, particularly the extreme heat in a closed car (even with the windows partly open). I have had luck with packing my film in water proof plastic boxes (the kind they sell in both sports stores and some camera shops) and then placing these boxes in my cooler in the car. If hiking with my camera when the temperature is extremely hot (above 90 f) I sometimes place one of those small chemical freeze bags into a zipper bag, wrap it in a rag and place the whole thing in my camera bag near my film. You must be very careful to avoid having any condensation form on the outside of the ice bag so wrap it carefully and perhaps double bag it once wrapped. But, if I am only out for a couple of hours and the temperature is not extreme I usually just keep the film in a protected pouch in either my camera bag or daypack without the cool bag. I’ve never had a real problem using these rather make-shift methods, even while hiking in Mojave. Good luck and enjoy your trip! The Badlands are spectacular – particularly at night with a full moon. Make sure that you also visit Spearfish Canyon and Custer State Park for all the wildlife.
