What lens to use for Wedding Photography

I have the great opportunity to attend two family weddings this year and 'pratice' taking wedding photos (both couples have a pro doing the 'real' photos) I currently have a Nikon D70 with kit lens and know that I am going to need some type of telephoto lens to do a wedding without being in their face all the time LOL! I am *very* new to SLR camaras and don't know much about different lens. I don't want to spend a fortune....any suggestions?

HI Grace, I think you should have 28-90mm lens, so that you can have better picture at the same time you can save time.

  Hello Grace,

Telephoto will help you make the subject stand out and also show nice depth of field. I suggest you practice alot before the wedding to avoid embarrasments.
You should also practice in the venue and visualize the event and what kind of shoots you need and what lense will suit the shoot.
You can do that by asking your friends to pose for you at the venue, for you to practice.
Good luck

  Hello Grace,

What Mr.Noor said here is 100% correct.

My experience :- Yesterday night I went to attend my colleague's Engagement day function, It started around 7.30PM. I used my new SLR ( just a begnner's one, not popular company, it has Aperture control, with 50mm focus free length and ext flash.)
I did following mistakes, which I realiased when I see all the photos in the afternoon time.

1.Since the video coverage was going on, I , few times, switched off the flash. Blender mistake. I should not have turned off it.
The result, even the closeup shots, the girl's and boy's faces came darker.

2.I took only one roll of film. ( I should have carried an extra one).I was clicking fast whenever I feel, I am missing few opportunities...smiles of financee...finace.!

It resulted , at last, I missed the closeup snaps, by then I donot have film. It got over.

3.Donot depend on zoom effect as it brings darker/shade on faces.

On aperture control, I played with , The snaps which I took with f/16 with flash, resulted nice pics.

With f/11 with flash, have produced darker effect.

Also, I had used 400 Speed Film, which is not advisable. Some pics came with grains....(disgusting)!!!
Use 100 or 200 speed film.

My sincere advice, Be Bold to go near the bride and grome atleast take few shots. Atlast, those pics will stand first and make others to raise their eyebrows on your pics. ( This is what happened in my case).

Anyway, I experimented a lot.

I miss my digital camera, as It went along with my friend for a tour.

Small Digital camera is also a good backup, when you just in case, run out of Film Rolls.

Take extra batteries along with camera.

Best of luck!

Note:- You read my reply this much , with patience.....I expect you atleast post few scanned good pics of bride and groom.

With regards,
