exposure compensation / aperture I have a Nikon 5700 which I am learning to use, in reviewing the manual it talks about using exposure compensation to Lighten, darken your images while composing them , over riding the value suggested by the camera. Can't I do the same by using the shutter speed and aperture ? Is there a big difference in the final outcome of the shot. ?

That's what the compensation does. It changes the speed or apeture from what the camera would normally suggest. You choose how far to go over or under.

yeppers, just don't forget to set it back when you don't need it as I have done in the past. It's makes it so you don't have to think about changing the aperture and shutter speeds, you just shoot like normal and it comes out under or over.

It depends on what mode you are using. If you are in full manual mode, adjusting the exposure compensation will only affect how the camera's meter reports that your settings will result in a correct exposure. You will still have to change the settings. If you are in aperture priority or shutter priority mode, where you set one and the camera selects the other, exposure compensation will affect how the camera selects its setting to make the exposure.
