can re-chargeable batteries die?

hi,

lately i've been having problems when shooting consecutively (@ 1/80 sec) even tho I charge them just before shooting.......i thought they were endless re-chargeables.

i recharge using one of those 'turbo 30-minute chargers. can re-chargeable batteries "finally die"? or is it the charger itself maybe?

thanks : )

They not only can finally die, they will. Rhe older they get, the less charge they hold, until they finally die. I would replace them before that. I know from experience that nothing lasts forever. I used to have a full head of hair and a slim waist. Oh, well.

  thanks, kerry....

i think I got these around july or august (and shooting about 5000 pics/6 mths)......just in general, do you happen to know about how long the usual rechargeable battery life is?

: )

Well, of the two cameras I use most of the time, neither has a rechargeable battery. The Olympus OM-2 uses a battery just to power the meter and the Pentax 645N runs on 6 AA's, so I don't have much first hand info. If the batteries are ni-cads, you have to let them run completely down before you charge them the second time or they will die a lot more quickly. The newer types don't have the "memory" that ni-cads do so they can be recharged without being completely run down. Sorry I'm not much help on lifespan of rechargeables.

The life span of rechageable batteries is usually expressed in re-charge cycles. The battery can be re-charged x number of times. The value of x will very from one brand/model to another. From your comment, I believe you ment that they are nickle metal hydride batteries. There are three basic kinds of rechargeable batteries for use in electronics, nickle cadmium (ni-cad), nickle metal hydride (not sure, I think its nihi) and Lithium Ion (li-ion).

Check the packaging or the manual (if they came with one) for your batteries to see how many re-charge cycles they can take. If you don't have either, try the manufacturers web site.
