flash problems

I have a cannon 500n with portaflash kit and synch leads. I set the camera at 250 speed and 11. the book says anything over 90 will be ok and the cam will set automatically. All the images are half blacked out. Is the speed to fast? plus I wanted to catch hair movement using fans.

The camera's maximum flash sync speed is 1/90. Using a flash you can use that speed or any LONGER shutter speed. Set to faster speeds and you'll get the half-blacked out images.
