Genius Cameras Anyone heard of these guys before? They are an ad running here on Betterphoto, with ridiculously low prices. Their site says everything is brand new with USA warranty, but you know, if it sounds too good to be true...

I just ordered a macro lense from them and recieved it just fine us warranty. I also ordered a filter and a speedlite I recieved that just fine, Us warranty. I tried to order a camera through them but they stated it was a grey market camera with no US warranty and that it was back ordered a month and a half. A grey market camera is supposed to be the same as US cameras but priced lower for foriegn markets. I don't understand the whole deal. What this company doesn't tell you is that for the camera to work you need to purchase a battery pack that is really expensive which makes the price of the camera more in line with everyone else. I think if you really wanted to you could buy a battery pack somewhere else but I don't know for sure. I don't feel all that secure purchasing an expensive camera with no warranty-feels risky to me. But a lot of people are doing it.

Just to clarify - "gray" market equipment is that meant for sale in other countries. It DOES NOT carry a manufacturer's USA warranty, so if it breaks, the manufacturer will not honor repairing it. Gray market equipment is usually cheaper, but if it breaks, you're pretty much SOL. Also, you may get an instruction manual written in another language! Michael H. Cothran

Thanks to both of you for the reply. I understand what gray market is, and so was intrigued as to how they could offer these prices and claim they also had US warranty. Not sure I understand about the battery back, Melissa. Does a camera with regular battery requirements somehow need a different battery pack? What camera were you after? Maybe it's a kind I don't know about. Thanks again.

I would be VERY careful with these guys. While some of their prices seem like good deals, others are definitely not. I was checking their Sigma lenses, and while some of their prices are cheaper than B&H, others are $200 to $300 more for the same lens. Sounds fishy. Melissa, I'm glad you got a few good deals. Good instint on not ordering the gray-market camera.
