Photography Question

Photo Shop, and also, Filters

Hello Everyone! I have three questions today.

(1) I'm thinking about purchasing Adobe Photoshop after recommended by several others. What is the difference (other than cost) between PS and PS Elements? If I purchase Elements to save some money, what would I be lacking? I am really looking to add that soft, filtered "dreamy" effect that I see so many of you use. Also, maybe basic editing options like color warming/correcting. Can I accomplish this with Elements or do I need to just bite the bullet and purchase PS?

(2) Instead of using filters on the camera, is it possible to get certain effects with the use of PS? For example, I see several photographs with a darkened circle around the edges...looks like someone put a black ring around the photograph...if that makes any sense. Also this "dreamy filter" that I see on several photos, is this a PS effect? I love how it softens the image.

(3) Okay, now that I have all these wonderfully digital-edited prints, how do I get them printed? Do any of you deal with an online order company, i.e. Kodak or Snapfish? I'm looking for good quality prints. I don't have a printer at home that's good enough to print my customer's pictures on, and we don't have any labs nearby. Only thing we have is a Walgreen's and the last roll of film I brought to them they scratched my negatives grrrrrrrrrrrr. YES I was furious!!

Any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated :)

Thanks bunches!!
Mandi

  1. The difference between CS and Elements is that the latter is a skeleton version. For what you indicated in your inquiry, Elements will do just fine. FYI - Elements comes FREE with the purchase of many consumer printers.
2. Short answer - Yes, you can.
3. There are a gazillion online digital labs. Pick a few, send them a file to print, and test them out. Then pick the one that has the best prices and consistent quality.
As an alternative, resort back to #1. You will pay $100 for Elements, and you sounded as if you were willing to pay the full price for CS if you had to. Why not just apply that money to a nice 13" Epson or Canon printer, and possibly get Elements for free in the process??? Then you can print at home whenever you want, and have full control of the entire process.
