Photography Question

pro labs

Hello all,

Is there a way to check "pro" lab locations online? Is there something that specifically denotes a "pro" lab or is it just because processing and printing (etc) all that they do. Do they normally do/offer more than that? Everybody suggests pro labs and is ready to jump down your throat (at least some people) if you don't use a pro lab but should I expect to drive hours or have all my interations be over the phone, email, or regular mail? I'm just curious and trying to learn more so hang in there with me please. Thanks!

Well, I won't jump down your throat. I'm too big around to fit! I will even admit to using a local minilab for many of my personal snapshots. However, I never trust anything I deem really important to them for a multitude of reasons. For one, my weddings are shot on 120 film and they don't even process that so that leaves them out. For another, they use rollers to run the film through. Rollers can scratch your negatives. Pro labs use the dunk and dip techniques where no metal touches your film. And yes, pro labs offer a lot more than just develop and print. They can give you much bigger enlargements, digital composites, thank you cards, sports cards, etc. The main thing though, is the fact that ther personnel are trained a lot more than the folks at local minilabs. I will have my film processed at a local lab only on certain days of the week, when the one person I trust is working. One day I was there and he had shut the lab down for the day to drain all the tanks. The people who were running it before he got there had put fixer in the developing tank and had ruined several rolls of film! The professional lab I use is Pro Photo in Lakeland. FL. I have used them since 1967 and they do excellent work. I don't have any problem working through the mail and over the phone. Call them at 1-800-237-6429 and they will send you a catalog giving their prices and showing what all they do.
