Photography Question

Candy Jones

Photo Labs & Developing

If I am taking pictures for myself, I don't mind going to the local One Hour Photo for developing, but when I am taking pictures for others, is there a better place to have my film developed and to order enlargements? Also, what about the cost? I can get enlargements pretty cheep at the One Hour. Is there much of a difference in photo labs?

Can you get a 8x10 for $2 and an 11x14 for under $4? Check out www.whcc.com

Essentially Candy, you get what you pay for. While mini-labs can be good, they can also be terrible. A professional quality lab, say a Kodak Q Lab or one having other professional ratings by Kodak, offers consistent, quality work. Chances are their film processing is done by dip and dunk rather than the roller transport system used in mini-labs. Dip and dunk prevents negatives or transparencies from being scratched during processing. {Although it can happen, but rarely in my experience}.

As for printing, yes you pay a premium at a quality lab for premium quality work. A pro lab will work with you to fine tune an image, offers different types of finishes, and related services that mini's don't. And, as for security, I have yet to have a pro lab lose or even misplace any of my jobs that they either processed or printed or both.

If you want to get a pretty good idea about what a high end professional grade lab charges for services, take a look at http://www.gammaphoto.com or http://www.isgophoto.com. Both accept orders by ups, fedex, or pony express. ;>) Use a pro lab and pass the cost on to your customers.
