Lenses Recommended for Wildlife & Bird Photography

Hello and thanks in advance for any recommendations and help anyone can provide. I am looking to buy a lens to be used primarily for wildlife and bird photography. Need recommendations below $1,000 and that work with Canon Digital Rebel. Zoom or fixed focal length recommendations are welcomed. I am already covered up to 135mm and don't often find myself needing anything between 135mm and 300mm. Again thanks in advance. Nevia

  Greetings,

There is a saying for bird photography - 'Life begins at 500.' This refers to the generalization that to get good - close up shots of birds, you need to have at least a 500mm lens.

I used the Sigma 170-500mm on the digital rebel with great results. The lens new is about $700 at B&H photo. The majority of the bird images on my website were with the Sigma 170-500. (I just upgraded to the Canon 600mm F4 L IS.) One big downside of the 170-500mm is that, for some design flaw, it isn't able to be coupled with a teleconverter.

I haven't used, but have heard great things about the Sigma 50-500 for wildlife and birds. That one is about $1000.00 at B&H Photo.

You could try using the mirror lenses, they are smaller and lighter, but I believe image quality does suffer.

I am sure others will have some good suggestions too.

Hope this helps,
Robert
