Photography Question

Amanda K. Padgham

How can I get great catchlights?

I have been looking through this forum and so many of you are such amazing photographers!! I was wondering if anyone could tell me how you get such amazing catchlights? I just purhcased a digital rebel xt last week and I have seen so many picsonhere, that were taken with that camera, where the eyes just look amazing!!My son has beautiful blue eyes (I dont mean to brag!) but the pics I'm taking aren't doing them justice. Do you know what I mean? I am trying to figure out how to make them look as clear as so many images on here. Do I have to use a reflector or something? What type of lighting is best? Sorry to be so annoying- I'm new and trying to learn as much as possible! Thanks so much!
Amanda

There are a number of ways.

1. Taking your picture with the light source in the best possible location. You should be able to see the catchlights in the view finder.

2. Use a flash. If your digital camera has a built-in flash. this shgould be no problem.

3. Add catchlights using the clone tool in Photoshop

4. If you have a transparency, use a pin to punch a small hole. The projection lamp will shine through the hole as a catchlight on the screen.
