Panasonic Lumix FZ10 vs Canon Powershot S1 IS

Hi everyone...

I was thinking of buying the Panasonic Lumix FZ3 camera. Then, Kerry suggested that I buy some camera that has manual focussing mode which would help me learn. So, I then opted for the Panasonic Lumix FZ10. Both have the same features except the anual focus mode.

Now, a friend of mine suggested another camera, the Canon Powershot S1 IS. It has similar features and a similar price. A few additional features like a flipping LCD display and ability to use the zoom lens to capture movies are present in the S1 IS.

I would love it if someone could tell me which of these cameras would be a better option.

Well, it's me again. I would opt for the Panasonic. It has 4.0 MP as opposed to 3.2MP and a greater zoom range. The greatest attraction to me would be that Leica lens.

  LOL, Kerry...

Looks like you are turning out to be some sort of a "Guru" for me. I hope you wont charge me too much for that !

Also, I am amazed at your reach. How in the world do you read all the questions and even have the knowledge to answer them. You sure you aren't up for a Nobel or anything??

I know about the megapixels and the Lumix has 12x as opposed to the 10x of Canon. I like te lumix too. Only thing thats pulling me towards canon is the flippable(does a word like that exist??) LCD screen and the ability to use the Zoom while recording video.

Whats your opinion?

Ganesh, the way I look at is this. If you want a video camera, buy a video camera. If you want a still camera, buy a still camera. The flipping LCD screen is just a gimmick, in my opinion. With the exception of these two things, the Panasonic has the Canon beat.

Go for more megapixels and more zoom.

Well, I finally seem to have decided that I will go with the Panasonic itself. The video is only a side-use that I expect from the camera. So, after going through a lot more opinions, I think I'll buy the Panasonic Lumix FZ-10.

Can anyone help me by telling me what is the REAL STREET PRICE in the US for that? I've checked a lot of online stores and the prices vary a lot.

Thanks all for the help.
