Canon Lens vs Sigma I have a decision to make soon; I have an opportunity to purchase a used (about 3yrs old ) Canon EF 70-200 f/2.8L for a price of $900.00+shipping or a Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 EX APO HSM for $886.00 shipping included. I shoot sports, mainly Rodeos. I will appreciate any and all opions toward helding me make this decision, Thanks.

If you have to choose between those prices go with the Canon. But I think you could find the sigma for much less. I bought the same Sigma on Ebay for considerably less ($630). It's a great lens. With the money I saved I bought a matched 1.4 TC. So look around. I think the sigma is a wonderful lens--but don't buy it new. Just carefully buy it used somewhere and you'll save a lot. At www.fredmiranda.com they come up for a decent price here and there. I'm sure the canon is a great lens too and that's a good price for that lens--so that is certainly something to consider as well. Karma

Oh Karma I for got to mention that this is the price, new, for Sigma Lens; $699.95, Sigma 1.4x EX APO Tele-Converter For Canon EOS $169.00, and $17.85 shipping, a total of $886.00. The Canon is used for $900.00, no tele-converter included.Would still go for Canon?

That's a decent price for new on the Sigma. From all that I've read and heard about these two lenses the Sigma is remarkably close if not identical to Canon in image quality. Benchmark tests are great on this Sigma. If it suffers in any area that's the focusing speed--which I find quite good but have heard Canon is better. Does that Canon come with a lens hood and tripod collar? Both are standard with the Sigma so that's something to consider. The canon isn't an Image Stablize version is it? If so it's the hands down winner, but somehow I don't think it is. If not then I'd probably go with the Sigma. The Sigma TC works well and is cheaper than canon, although I think I read that Sigma's TC now works with the Canon 70-200 as well! If there is anyway you can use both lenses side by side that would be helpful. Since you're shooting Rodeo you want excellent focus speed and I just can't give you hands on experience there having not used Canon's! I hate these lens buying decisions! I'm always so hesitant to actually make the final decision. I can tell you that this particular Sigma is an excellent lens that many pros use. I don't think you'll go wrong with it no matter what. But is Canon slightly better for your needs? Perhaps. Karma
