  Jim,
I don't know if this will be succinct or concise enough as a "definition" for you but should give you an idea of what it is.

An editorial photograph "tells a story" about people, places, and/or events. It can be a single photograph, or a series of them connected with a common theme called a picture story. Editorial photographs capture a slice of life and communicate it to others visually. Photojournalism, the photographs you see in newspapers and news magazines, is classic editorial photography. I class wedding photographs other than the formal portraits as editorial photography. They tell the story of the wedding ceremony and the reception. Environmental portraits can also be editorial by not only depicting likenesses, but also making a statement about who the people are, what they do, and what they believe in.

Hope this helps you out.
