Photography Question

Bobbie Ulmer

Circle of Photography

Can anyone tell me about Circle of Photography or Photography vibes?

I think it's a similar operation to picture.com and the "Endless Journeys" book. Anyone that enters a picture in the contest is sent an email saying that thier picture was selected for publication, and the book can be pre-ordered for $60 or $70 (or more).

Then it takes years for the book to come out, and your picture is only published if you paid the money.

In other words, if you were excited & flattered to learn that they wanted to publish your photo, sorry to burst your bubble, but every picture gets "selected", and they only publish it if you pay the money.

So does that mean my photo was crap then and all they wanted was money. Wow I feel like crap now. Glad I decided not to buy anything.

No, it doesn't mean your picture was crap. (Anyone interested in the origin of that word?) Your picture could be a piece of junk or worthy of a Pulitzer Prize and it would win with them either way. They are a vanity press publisher.

That's more than harsh, Richard, it's mean spirited.

Lots and lots of people have been taken in by these groups. Look at some of the other threads on these, with hundreds of posts.

When they pump you up with compliments, and use technical terms to describe the merits of your photograph, I can see how people could get fooled.

It doesn't mean they're stupid.

Chris and Kerry, true, fooled or gullible might be better words to describe those taken by these groups. But Richard was just being blunt about the matter, not mean spirited. Big difference...his comments being directed at no one in particular.

For comparison - read 'Justin's' comments and replies who by the way, is alive and kicking here at BP and the two of you are doing your darnedest to communicate with him/her! He's defaulting to his previous M.O.
Wake up and smell the lens cleaner guys.

Take care.

I don't mind communicating with "Justin" or anyone else, as long as they don't go over the top. (Yes, when the rhetoric appears the same one can tell.) I don't want to start a political debate here but I will use this as an analogy. I am a political conservative but I like Alan Colmes. I can't agree with much of what he says but I like him because he's a gentleman.

I can smell the lens cleaner and it doesn't bother me. I just wish I could get the smell of Dektol and Fixer off my hands!

Susan: The word "crap" has been around for several centuries. Its original meaning referred to the leftovers after rendering fat. Its current meaning (as mostly used) came about from the fact that a 19th century English manufacturer of flushing water closets emblazoned his name on his product. his name was Thomas Crapper. BTW, the porcelain fixture in your bathroom is technically a water closet. A commode was a piece of furniture used to hold the "night bucket" before the widespread use of the flushing water closet.
Just a little bit uf useless trivia.

This is a classic! Here you have Richard L. throwing around the word "stupid". How ironic can you get?

Hey Richard,

First of all, you might want to think about getting out the old spellcheckaroonski and giving your text a once over. And on a related note, grammar is another area you might want to brush up on.

Rick,

You're not helping either. Chris answered the question straight up and Richard was in fact being mean spirited. Check his text again. You wouldn't speak to someone in person that way, so why do it here?

Bobbie,

You were smart to research the subject before getting out your wallet and pulling the trigger on this obvious scam. I, of course, am assuming that you or someone you know was about to get reeled in by these scumbags.

Anytime you catch wind of something "strange" or "crazy sounding" or "too good to be true", do what Bobbie did and research it. Also, check out www.snopes.com for general rumors on the web. They are experts at debunking rumors and verifying truths.

Narrator,

I'm new to this forum, and if you want to ban me for sticking up for the innocent, feel free. I just can't stand the bullying that occurs in some of these forums. As I understand it, the general intent of a forum is to "cross pollinate" and help each other to flourish and prosper. Unless of course the forum is dedicated to an anti-progressive cause, like irritating people by not sticking to the facts and just answering the damn question, as Chris did. In my humble opinion, guys like Richard should be banned from forums that are meant to assist people in their endeavors. They don't accomplish much, other than getting in the way by mucking up the process with their useless text.

Ta.

Tim, Welcome to BP! As you know, this is a Public Forum with all shapes and sizes. That means you should expect threads here to go off topic from time to time. Some of them get rather heated (see Digital section). But that does not mean we have to react to them does it? If we're a balanced and mature participant, as I am sure you are, we can be flexible, right? We don't even have to jump into the fray if the discussion upsets us in some way. Just say no.

No offense, but if the public forum environment is too unrestricted for you then perhaps you should sign up for a private forum with a dedicated moderator. Nice and safe. There are many for photogs.

Richard may have trouble with his spellign. And he sure is a blunt chap. But to his credit, he did not resort to foul language!

By the way, Richards use of "you" was in the plural form, not singular. Like speaking into the air over something that seems so obvious. If your honest with yourself you will recall times when you said such things - with no malicious intent. Regards.

  Rick,

Well said. Thank you for your candid response.

Private forums? Never heard of them, but I feel no need to take prophylactic measures against those who would speak their minds. In fact, I feel blessed to live in a country where we are all free to do so. I was simply attempting to point out the irony of Richard L's comments (people who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones), and the fact that Chris already answered the question. And I may also point out that Chris did so without getting nasty about it and potentially making Bobbie and Amber feel like idiots for not knowing any better. "Ignorant" would have been a much better word for RL to use to describe those poor souls who get sucked in by these scams. But I have to assume that RL has never made such a mistake in his lifetime, since he stands so firmly in judgment of others.

As to the use of the word “you” in the plural form...c’mon. First of all, how can you tell? Also, why is it that people have responded to RL’s text with comments like “not very nice”, “uncalled for”, “more than harsh”, “mean spirited”? And he responds with “truth hurts don’t it”? I say go with RL’s advice: If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck, then RL should be flying south come winter. There were “newbies” looking for some help and RL made them feel like jerks because they’re not “pro’s” who know better, like himself. I wonder how RL found out they were scams? Hmmm… Maybe that’s why he sounds so bitter? Look, he wasn’t helping anyone with his unnecessary comments. Just call it what it is and move on. Now that’s blunt, which I’m sure both you and RL can appreciate.

Speaking of moving on, the site IS called betterphoto.com, and with that in mind, allow me to save the reader some time, since we often scroll to the bottom of forum discussion pages when seeking answers on the web.

CONCLUSION:

CIRCLE OF PHOTOGRAPHY IS A SCAM! VISIT THIS SITE FOR MORE INFO: http://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/ripoff145776.htm

PHOTGRAPHY VIBES IS A SCAM! HERE IS A HELPFUL LINK THAT STATES THE SAME AND EDUCATES THE READER ON THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LEGITIMATE AND ILLIGITIMATE PUBLISHERS.

Amber said her picture must be crap. Well, from a designers point of view . . . crap is an acronym. It stands for Contrast, Repitition, Alignment, and Proximity. This is what my professors have been teaching their students to help them learn some of the Design Principles.

Sorry, this is what came to my head when I read this thread and I couldn't help but mention it.

I received that letter from C of P also and altho I was initially flattered and excited, it didn't take long to see there was a stinky RAT near by. By the time I got to the bottom of the letter, I could see it as plain as day. But then I am 58 AND I have become increasingly investigative and borderline paranoical (if that's a word...LOL) as time goes by. I am laid off and have little space for financial sidestepping in one direction or another, so to part with my $$$ or even worse yet, my credit card info would have to be investgated pretty thoroughly.

I agree that STUPID is an indelicate word and not quite 'politically correct' (we coin words in today's society to cover the shortcomings of people who may be SHORT, OVERWEIGHT, NOT SO ATTRACTIVE...lest we would insult)...BUT, sometimes I sit here in my living room and see people on the TV news crying and whining and warning others to be careful because they sent their money to Nigeria to save a deposed King who was in prison, or because they took out a before payday loan and then found themselves stuck in a quagmire of 80% interest charges that have them eternally endentured to this little fly by night loan company that equals..MAFIOSO. And in today's delicate environment of indentity theft, at my apt complex, I see people throwing away their bank statements and credit card bills (WHOLE, UNSHREDDED) and they are falling out of the dumpster on the ground for anyone to see and pick up! ...What the heck are these people thinking???????????? When something happens to them they are all teary eyed and surprised..."WHY ME????"

Maybe they already feel STUPID and they are embarrassed and would prefer to be called 'gullible'.

:o)barbara

ps: if it's too good to be true...INVESTIGATE IT!!!!

www.google.com
www.snopes.com

if they are asking for money...
INVESTIGATE IT!!!! before pushing that button!!!!
try
www.BetterBusinessBureau.com
Be introspective....remember what your mama taught you...don't sign anything without reading it.
In the case of the internet...if you didn't iniate the deal, INVESTIGATE!!!
If you recieve an e-mail offering you something...and it sounds good to you don't go through the email to purchase, go to the company website (and don't use the link given to you in the email)....go to www.google.com and do a search.

NIP THINGS IN THE BUD BEFORE YOU PART WITH YOUR MONEY. A few extra minutes could save you $$$ and LOTS of tears.

I guess I am the only fool around if this is a scam but I did receive the book and my photograph was in it as promised. I am not sure it was worth the money I paid but neither was something I bought on eBay. I have enjoyed looking at the photographs and they have given me some ideas. As far as being paid for the photographs I take, I am not allowed to make money because I am on SSDI and our government says $800 a month is enough for me to live on and will not allow me to make money. I do photography because I enjoy it.

Yes there are plenty of photo contests out there that are legit. Try Steve's Digicams....It's a great one and I won a few things off of there. They give a camera and some other stuff away every month and it's fun! I won a coupleof things on there and I find them to be very fair and decent.

O.K. From one who knows better than you all. I have been selected for publishing by Circle of Photographers twice. Once for Photography Vibes and once for a future edition. Now, I got a copy of PV from my parents for a Christmas gift which arrived two weeks ago because they had to sell editions to make the money to publish them. The book is a very nice book. There are some stunning pictures in it and it worth having. . .

for $29.95. This is a rip and nobody should buy this book. I would even refrain from submitting photos for the publishing. My two artist's proofs are in my gallery so that you can see the pricing. I think that the photos I submitted are from a fantastic perspective, though perhaps not the greatest composition. But however good they may be, they are now tainted by being associated with COP and PV.

I got e-mail confirmation on one picture a few weeks ago and then a letter like Christopher's just the other day. Of course when you start reading it you're like, "Cool!" By the time I got to the part where they were saying, "You pay us this for your picture" I was thinking "Yah, rite."

That's not to say that everyone who happens to buy into this is a flipping idiot -- there are some smart people out there who believe things for different reasons. I dare say that all of us have been "taken in" at one point or another in our lives. It doesn't mean one needs to hop onto the Little Bus and take a ride to the nearest mental institution -- but it definitely pays to question everything nowdays!

I'm glad that I did a search and found a couple of strings confirming what I thought all along. Thanks to all who have posted.

  I too got a letter from photo.com .
I am so glad I checked it out. Thank you all! I sent Photo.com a letter and this is what I wrote.
Dear Circle of Photographers and Picture.com,
When I received the letter from you stating that you had chosen my photo in your contest I was thrilled! I was so proud that my work had finally paid off and that I was being recognized. I was so proud of myself. I boasted to everyone about all of this and they were proud of me. Now I am embarrassed and ashamed that I even entered it or said anything to anyone about it.
I thought I was entering a photo contest until I got this letter from you stating that you had chosen my photo for publication . I understand that this same letter was sent to anyone who sent in a photo to your contest. I have seen numerous comments stating so on various web sites . I now believe that you are running a scam and I will not be a part of that. I am requesting that you remove me and my photo from your contest and remove my photo from your web site.
I am an artist and my photo's are my work and my vision and to have it just selected to sell a book is a down right slap in my face.
Please do not publish my picture titled "Motherly Duck Love" or "Ducky Love" by Donna Powell without my written consent and payment . If you so choose to publish it I will take legal actions against you. You do not have my permission or consent to publish my photo at this time.
It is my photo and my work.
If you think my photo is worthy of publication and would like to publish it ,then I will expect you to purchase it from me.
In order for me to give you permission to print my photo in your book titled" 2005 edition of Photography vibes" or in your book titled " Endless Journey's* " ISBN: 0-7951-5247-7 it will cost you $100.00 U.S. Dollars .
I will not buy the book titled" 2005 edition of Photography vibes" that your offering me.
After all I have already paid for my work and why should I let you charge me for doing it. I believe that anyone who is published in your book should receive at least a free copy of the book since your not paying any of them for their photos . They too have already paid for their work.
If you do publish my photo without paying me I will take legal action against you for not only the price of my photo but all cost incurred, including all filing , attorney , legal fee's , court fee's , travel and personal expenses. I will also file suit against you for mental distress .
Have you heard of spell check? The word assymetric is spelled with one s. You will not make an ass out of me by scamming me to buy a book from you nor will you scam anyone else using my photo.
The photo's I take are not free to me. It cost me for the camera, the computer to upload it from my camera, the electricity to run my computer, the cost of my travel to take pictures and my time.
$100.00 is a bargain for the picture titled "Motherly Duck Love'" or the photo titled " Ducky Love". To take that picture it cost me 48 hours of my personal time and approximately $450.00 in travel expenses.

I wonder if I will get a response from them on this. hmmmm. I will let you know.

I had it on this site, in my gallery, until a kind member informed me it would not go any further with the stamp. But, of coarse for $69.95 it would be "published" in a nicely bound book, by Circle Of Photographers! This site is the best for honest answsers, ideas and support.   Dear Mr. Richard Lucas ,
I do not consider myself a stupid person so I will take no offense to your comment. You obviously did not read what I wrote very carefully as you would have seen that I did not send them one red cent. The reason I did not send them money was because I came here and checked it out and I do not ejoy just giving my hard earned money away.
I would never knowingly let anyone use my photo's to scam anyone and that is why I even wrote them in the first place.
Thank you Barbara B. for the support!

i wonder if there's some way to prove to someone official that it's not there. Cause I really doubt it's gonna be.

Richard, you missed my point. I was
just saying people should look within before throwing stones. Saying someone made a stupid mistake is one thing (We have all done that.) Likewise, saying someone was naive or gullible is one thing but calling them stupid is rude. I have no problem with anyone pointing out the mistakes of either others or myself but it should be done in a polite manner.

Hi, I also got an email saying my photo was chosen because they appreciated the "assymetric composition and light mix used throughout". It really is a great photograph too, that's why I never had any doubt about it. I was gonna buy a book (2005 Photography Vibes) but I always check out companies before I send them money. When I couldn't find anything I searched them on yahoo and found this site. Thank God. I never would have thought about them being a scam like you say. I also sent in a picture to picture.com and cutestpetcontest.com.
Question: What will they do with it ?
Should I be worried ?

guys, there are hundreds if not thousands of people getting into photography every day.... Im sure not all will hear about these scams right off and Im sure not all will join a forum like this right of either... that is one way companies like this seem to survive! If anyone is duped by this scam its not out of stupidity or that they are gullible, its that they didnt get the memmo...plain and simple. in fact its kind of stupid, in my book, that someone would assume that every photographer in the world has seen this discussion at all. I personally know at least 15 photographers, on the Internet who have never used a forum at all...so does that make them stupid? No. But it would make one stupid to assume they were stupid..

Well gang, new member here and I have to say, I guess I fell into the ignorance trap of phot vibes and international library of photography too...and I must admit it was all vanity too...lol
My fiancee and her son were tickled pink that the pic I took of them "won" such mention...but because I am an amateur photog...i fell hard...lol
I have however received the plaque, actually two of them, One from photo vibes, which I wasn't expecting and the other from the International Library of Photography. They are nice and my gal and my parents will like them...as for the book...who knows, I will be happy if they arrive but am now not expecting them. Thanks for the forum gang...i will do more research next time.

Later,

Mike

  Richard,

I couldn't decipher what you wrote in the thread. Could you please write it in english, using spell check so people can understand it. Actually, I am a professional photographer.

I was just wondering what you're deal is? Why do you feel the need to put others down harshly, ridicule them, or imply that you are more intelligent than them. They do have doctors that specialize in helping people with problems such as yours. You should look into it, it'll make your life a lot better.

I was published in photography vibes a couple of years back. I didn't have to send any money. But my Mother wanted a book in the family so she got one for me. A. I would not have paid for it had I known that the publication was so cheap and the images included were, no offense anyone, unplanned snapshots. B. It was something I would not have wanted to be included in in the first place. I was kind of embarassed that a candid that I was proud of was in with those pictures.

Bobbie...some are scams, in fact most are...but I received a plaque and 2 books from Photo Vibes and never even heard of them. So, not everyone has bad experiences with them...i paid nothing and got a nice couple of books and a plaque, my parents love it as it gives them bragging rights...lol

First of all I'd like to thank you for your extremely rude and immature response to my response.Very Professional, I'm sure that attitude takes you far in your relationships with clients.

I have never seen the movie the "jerks" but it makes sense that you have. I really don't think that it is appropriate for you to be calling someone an a** on this thread or this site. It is after all a photography site. Your posted comment just continues to show how ignorant and disrepectful you are. I'm not sure how old you are but my guess would be that you are not a photographer at all, just some kid trying to start trouble. It's really sad and pathetic. You really should consider professional help, swaering at people you don't know over the net is a definate sign of an anger issue. The reason I emailed you instead of posting my reply is that, unlike you, I think of how my words may impact others. I didn't want to embarrass you or cause people to laugh at you.
