Photography Question

Nikon D70 macro lens

HI, I have a Nikon D70 and I love it. I have an 18-70 mm lens which seems to be a good all around lens.
However I am looking for an excellent macro lens that I can also use as a telephoto. If there is such a thing. Macro is my priority. My price range goes up to $ 1,000. Or else just an excellent macro AF
Thanks for any assitance with this.
Cynthia

You are in luck (sort of!). Nikon arguably makes the finest macro lenses in the world (they call them "micros"). I own them all. Their current crop is a 60mm, 105mm, and 200mm. All AF, and all with 1:1 capability.
Since you want telephoto capability also, I would strongly recommend the 200/4 ED Micro. It is my all-time favorite lens. Street price is the low teens new, so it's a bit above your budget cap, but you really get what you pay for. And you might find one on Ebay or from other used sources. It serves well as a nice telephoto lens, but for flowers and other macro work, etc. it is simply superb.
My second choice would be the 105/2.8 Micro Nikkor. It is about half the price of the 200/4, and will not give you the telephoto effect of the 200, but still gives you some. It also serves as a good portrait lens. I use it in the field for some flowers, but mostly in the studio for commercial jewelry work.
Finally, Nikon use to make a flat field true micro zoom, the 70-180mm. I believe it died a quiet death, but I could be wrong. B&H Photo still lists it as an "import" item. It was never that popular, and it was not as stunning in its performance as the two lenses above, but because of its versatility as a telephoto zoom, some trade off in image quality was considered ok. You might be able to find a used one if it's of any interest to you.
But for the finest in macro quality, choose from the 60, 105, and/or 200.

  Hi Mike, I ended up purchasing a 105mm f2.8 . Total price was 406.00
Thanks for the tips. I did some research based on your response. There are so many lenses, ir is hard to know the best one to choose.

I am curious, also. I am looking to buy a macro lens also, but wondered about the 60mm. I do not do portrait work, and have a nice telephoto lens already. I want something specifically for close work. I haven't seen much discussion about the 60mm, so if your reseach shed any light on this I would appreciate sharing your knowlege.
