Photography Question

Linear or Circular ?

I have a Nikon N-75 camera. I bought a Linear polarizing filter(Quantrary) sometime ago. When I try taking pictures of a waterbody, there is no change in glare with or without the polarizer (even when I turn the filter). Should I buy a circular polarizer and if so, how should I use it ?

Autofocus cameras require a circular polarizer.

Kerry is correct. You need a circular polarizer in order to meter correctly on an auto focus camera. It functions in the same way as a linear. Just screw it in, and turn it to the desired affect, just like you normally would. You CAN use your linear polarizer with your N-75, but the metering will be hap-hazard.
As far as your question about the glare on the body of water, the circular polarizer will not make any difference. Both circular and linear polarizers function in the same way, so if one won't remove the glare, neither will the other.

Get's in the way of auto focus, yes. But can meter thru it, just like a neutral density filter.

I don't know about that, Greg. My T90 (manual focus) required a circular to meter with any degree of consistensy. Might be different with Nikon, but I wouldn't know why.
