How to assess a lens before buying

Hello!

I'm an amateur photographer with liking for nature & wildlife. I use a Nikon FG (vintage stuff) and would like to buy a 300 mm tele-lens. A shop (in my hometown Bangalore, India) is offering me a Nikon compatible Sigma at a reasonable price (ca.$200). Now, I would like to know, how I can find out that the lens is a genuine one (given the fact that some of these dealers are not always very trustworthy).

Thanks in advance -

P Basu / Bangalore / India

I'm not sure what you mean by determining if the lens is a "genuine one." I presume if the lens is inscribed "Sigma" that it is a Sigma lens.
There are lots of Ai and Ais Nikkors available pretty cheap. The 300/4.5 ED was a great lens, and would work well with your FG.

I do know what you mean and understand your concerns about the lens being "genuine", but I guess this is a difficult concept for our nice friends in the developed world.
I'm no expert, but I would definitely go to the store and try the lens on the camera and take a few photos (even if inside the shop) and have them developed before buying the lens.
I may not know that much about photography, but I was born and raised, and have lived in several countries where a brand name inscribed in something does not mean it is the real thing.

Good luck.

Is this a used lens or a new lens? If it is a new lens, ask them to let you see the warranty papers. I'm not sure if black/grey market lenses would also come with fake warranty papers.

If you can get the serial number of the lens, you might be able to verify it with Sigma.

The Sigma Service & Distribution Center nearest you is SMI Photo Systems in Pakistan. You can email them at smiphoto@cyber.net.pk

Good luck.

  Hello Daniela, Michael and Chris,

Thanks very much for your tips. To answer the question asked by Chris, I am trying to get a new lens and not a used one.

Cheers -
