Grainy Photos

I just returned from a trip to Europe and took many pictures with my Canon EOS IX Camera. I took many panasonic photos of various sites, with several repeat shots. I took several normal size shots and none of them were grainy. On 17 rolls of APS film, all of them have many grainy photos and then a few clear shots of the same thing. The pictures were taken of the same thing maybe 2 seconds later with the same settings. Could this be a developer problem, x-ray machine or just bad photography. I've used this camera for three years and never had this problem before. It usually takes great clear and crisp shots. I'm so disappointed and hope I can salvage some of these somehow. I did carry the camera and film, so it went through the carry-on ex-ray machine. Supposedly, it was safe according to the signs.

Carry on x-rays are usually safe for 1-2 passes of film up to ISO 800. At least that's the case in the USA. Not sure of the standards in Europe.
However, the effects are cumulative. If your film went through the scanners 4+ times prior to being developed it may show some damage. See Kodak's Tech. Bulletin on Baggage X-rays for more info and samples of x-ray damaged images.

In general, APS panoramic prints will show more grain than C or H sized prints. To make a P print (4" x 11.5") the negative is enlarged 2x over that for C print.
