Setting Canon 580EX E-TTL compensation

I took some senior photos the other day and noticed that the 580EX E-TTL operation results in a different flash exposure, on my Canon 300d depending on if I am shooting a full length portrait or a close head-shoulders shot. THe full length results in a brighter subject flash; the close up gives a very good flash exposure.
QUESTION: Does anyone with 580EX experience have a routine of changing the compensation settings depending on if they're shooting full length (not covering most of the frame) versus a waist-up or head shot (filling most of the frame)?
Especially if the ambient light surroundings is around sunset with a fairly dark background (i.e. evergreens, shaded building side, etc.)
