How to modify an Tilt & Shift Lens

Regarding Canon's tilt/shift lenses, does anyone know any advantages of placing the til/shift on parallel axis? The lens is comes with perpendicular placement, which Canon says may be modified by an authorized dealer. I can only assume that an image may be shifted first ( with rise or fall, or side to side), then tilt applied to that orientation, in the same direction. Currently, only swing(tilt) left or right could be applied to an image that has been shifted up or down. Where would the advantages be in the real world?

Thanks, Harry

  Harry,
Not being familiar with these lenses, other than knowing of their existence, are you saying that the movements are not rotable on the camera when you switch from H to V shooting?
If so, it would appear that these lenses would then have only Rise/Fall and Tilt on one axis, and Lateral Shift and Swing on the other axis. It sounds like Canon is giving you the choice as to which one you want on your Horizontal or Vertical shots.
Shooting large format, I've never had this issue, but I can see where it would be somewhat of a concern in your circumstances.Tilt is the most commonly used movement, used to increase DOP. It would be ashamed if you were limited to this in only horizontal or vertical shooting.

Thanks for the response, Michael. The motions are rotateable, up to 90 degrees. This lense comes this way. When you rotate the lense(not the camera), you can then apply tilt/shift vertically or horizontally, but the associated shift, or tilt will be perpendicular to the chosen tilt/shift. I guess I would have to decide if it were more useful to be able to tilt/shift in parallel fashion. Any thoughts?

Thanks, Harry
