Should I buy Nikon or Canon

I can't seem to find any specials on Canon, but I find alot on Nikon and Oylmpus. Ive learned through the years that buying cheap can cost you. I've heard that Canon is leading the market and they are moving foward alot faster. Any suggestions?

I'll start off by saying that I'm a Canon fan, I've used Canon film and digital cameras, and certainly wouldn't switch now.

That being said, I don't think going with Nikon or Olympus should be considered "buying cheap" compared to Canon. Both (Nikon more so) have very good reputations among pros and amateurs.

It's true, you don't usually see Canon cameras going on sale. I think it's part of an agreement for stores to be a "Canon Authorized Dealer" that they pretty much sell at a set price. They do usually drop the retail price when a newer or upgraded model comes out.

Here are two good resources to use when shopping for cameras: B&H Photo www.bhphoto.com has good prices, and they carry just about everything. When browsing, you can refine your search to the brands you want to compare, then sort by price to see if simarly-priced models have comparable features.

The other is www.dpreview.com
I've seen several recommendations for this site here at BP, and I've found it to be very useful. They have detailed reviews of many cameras.

Good luck.

  Justin,

What are you looking for from your camera? What do you like to shoot? Digital or film? What's your budget? These are all questions that would need to be answered before any specific feedback can be offered.

Both Nikon and Canon offer great "systems". There are strengths and weaknesses in both. For Nature photographers needing really long IS lenses, Canon might be the better choice because there are more lenses to choose from on the long end.

For a DSLR, it's hard to beat the "value" in a Nikon D70. It's packed with great features, and produces great photos. It's body isn't as solid as more costly models and the viewfinder leaves a lot to be desired. However, for the money, it's hard to beat.

What I would recommend is to narrow your search to a few models that have the functions you want and are in your budget. Go to a camera store and handle them. Play with all the buttons and dials and see what feels good in your hands. In the end, most of your money will be spent on lenses anyway.

You should buy the Nikon - or the Canon - or Pentax - or Minolta - or Contax. Personally, I like, or liked Olympus, when they made an SLR, but they don't anymore. The point is this: Buy what YOU like. Try all brands and see which one feels the best to you. All of the above named manufacturers make excellent cameras and lenses so nobody can point to a certain manufacturer and say theirs is the best. Most pros use Canon or Nikon because of the breadth of their lens and accessory lines, not becaue their quality is better (and because a lot of their lenses can be rented in most major markets when the pros need a lens they don't own or want to buy). The best suggestion is to buy the least expensive camera you can that has the features YOU want and splurge on the lenses. All 5 of the manufacturers I listed make cheap lenses and top notch lenses (except Contax - all Zeiss lenses). Don't get hung on a name. Buy what works for you.

Thanks for your quick tips. Ive also been asking on other forums and the majority was Canon. So I did the next best thing by comparing pictures from high end canon to high end nikon. Id have to say that Canon made much better pictures of people. The nikon made excelllent flower pictures, but I don't think that would help pay for my equipment. I even checked out a photographer(one of the top ten photographers pics Ive seen) who recently changed over from Nikon to Canon and he showed me his shots with both in the same setting and lighting. He was still using film and his Nikon D70 for still shots. Until he tried out his friends Canon on people and has now put his film camera on the shelf. His quote to me was "that the grass is greener on Canons side of the fence".

hey what about Miyama, the best darn film camera out there. Well, since I switched to digital I would only use Canon, looks like Nikon got left in the dust there. Canon has way more employees, they work 16hr days and even on weekends. Im going for the long haul team

  Justin:
Your question is like asking what car should you buy?
a Honda Or a Toyota, a Ford or a Chevy?
They're both good, they both have flaws, they all dont cost the same.
Canon and Nikon are both Great, but Canon is a little higher in the food chain, I tested both canons and nikons, and well I ended up with the Canon Digital Rebel XT, and I have to say, it's one hell of a camera, smaller and lighter than the original rebel, and nikon d70, great affordable price, it comes quite close to the EOS 20D but it costs 500 dollars less, and I switched from a kodak 4mp cx7450...and Man...what a difference. Combine the canon with a Canon Pixma photo printer and say goodbye to photolabs.

  Hi Justin,
I have used Canon since 1977 and never had any problems, I love them. I recently sold my DRebel and bought the 20D, excellent camera, superb pics and the low noise at high ISO's has to seen to be believed. Canon are currently running a mail in rebate for $100 on this camera plus many other lens. (http://consumer.usa.canon.com/app/pdf/Promotions/CIWC_Coupon_041505.pdf) Hope this helps.

i've used both nikon and canon. I found canon easier to manipulate but I like the image quality of nikon. Of course, you'll have to assess your needs before deciding. We all prefer something else...when you know what you need, you'll know what to buy!!! Buy nikon!! hehehehe! Good luck!
