Filter w/lens hood

I have a Sigma 170mm to 500mm lens which requires an 86mm circular polarizing
filter. When I use the lens hood, which is a bayonet type made for the lens, which the mfg. says to use at all times to avoid halogens, the filter cannot be screwed into secure locked position due to the configuration of the hood. So far it has been either or and not both. I have checked with every retailer of photo accessories I can find.Even e-mailed the mfg., who hasn't replied after three weeks, but as yet no solution. Help?
Greg

How is the hood interferring with the filter? If it bayonets to the lens, then it must be wider than the 86mm filter diameter. Does your polarizer have a post sticking out of it that you rotate toward the sun for maximum effect? If so, this can be removed (probably unscrewed) from the filter ring without imparing its function.

Hi Jon, It's probably my fault for not explaining fully. When I put my filter on first, even unscrewing the adjustment peg, the lens hood will not fit over the filter. If I put the lens hood on first, I have to drop the filter down in and then it cannot be tightened
or adjusted. But what I really want to know is can I shoot successfully using only the filter without the lens hood. I have checked and noone carries a lens hood larger than 86mm. Thanks, Greg

Greg, of the two items, the hood or the filter, most of the time the filter is more important if you can't use both at the same time. You can use your hand, a piece of heavy paper, etc. to "shade the lens from direct sunlight and get good results. Ansel Adams often used his hat as a lens hood and he took one, or two, pretty good pictures in his time.
