Photography Question

Tom Walker

African American Wedding

I've done several weddings and a good friend just asked me to do hers, Since she's a good friend I readily agreed. Afterwards I started thinking about the contrast between her dark skin and a white wedding gown and now I'm worried about exposing for her skin tone and blowing out the gown or getting the dress right and having the skin tones blocked up, will be using several 35mm and 645 cameras and probably NC160 film.
Any suggestions or hints?

Tom: I don't think this will be a huge problem with a (low contrast) color negative portrait film if you shoot on a cloudy day OR use fill flash.

Check the Kodak site and the Fuji site for their recommended professional portrait film that is low in contrast. Or ask a pro film dealer.

Thanks Peter, the wedding is supposed to be outside on an island, but during the rainy season so I guess I'l get some low contrast film and wait for the weather.

Don't worry about the contrast between Adrican American skin and a white dress. Just use a low contrast film like Kodak NC. Think of it this way. The average wedding is a white (OK, we're actually a light tan) bride in a WHITE dress standing next to a white (again, more of a tan) groom in a BLACK tux so the contrast problem is always there. You just have to use the right film and you will be fine.
