Photography Question

Storm Photos

I will be doing severe weather photography this spring in the Great Plains for about 10 days. I realize there are extreme lighting conditions along with blowing dust, strong winds, rain, etc. I will also be taking some pictures from a moving vehicle. I'll be taking pictures of cloud features, Great Plains scenery, lightning, and possibly tornadoes. I have a Canon Rebel G and a Nikon FM 10 (used solely for lightning shots). Any advice on film speeds for the extreme lighting gradients? I generally use Velvia 50 for the lightning-is this correct? Also, I'd like to rent a Canon Digital Rebel or Rebel XT this chase season. Any words of wisdom for using them? I've never shot with a digital camera. Thanks for any help!

The only lightning shots I've taken have been at night using the "bulb" setting. I've found that 100 ASA at f-5.6 or f-8 produces the sharpest bolts and best sky/landscape illumination.

...Wish I was going with you! For years, it's been a fantasy of mine to see and photograph a tornado.
(We don't get any here in my part of the country.) :(

  Hi Bob,

You can go on storm chasing tours with a host of companies. Look into weatherassociates.com. I've been going with them for 6 years and they're probably some of the best in the business.
