I dont think an organization like this carries and professional weight or benefits for professioanl photographers. I think they give you Press Credentials which I would guess are worthless in most cases where credentials are required. ASMP (American Society of Media Prefessional, PPofA (Professional Photographers of America, NANPA, and Advertising Photographers of America are all reputable organizations that work hard for the profession.

Anybody see a pattern with groups with "International" and "Photographers" in the title?

I have been a member of IFPO for around 12 years and yes they do make their money through memberships and credentials, but with these credentials I have received VIP passes to such events as the Tough Man Competitions and several major Rock concerts. It has it's benefits and drawbacks just like anything else.

Indeed Greg, we have :) . . . and I've also noticed a pattern of people becoming members the very day they post positive comments about these scams, and in most cases not even bothering to take up the gallery option here . . . hmmmmm . . .

regards,
Sheldon

The deal on something like this is an media relations for an event gets several fax for passes, and you're really depending on chance that they'll give all request that look official, which depending on the event and priority, can be a media related sounding name and some company letter head.
So you join, will you get passes, you just might. Are you being recognized as media like a magazine or newspaper. Not really, you're just making them think you are.
