Press Passes How do photographers get press passes for events? I would like to do work on a freelance baisis but have no clue how other photographers get their press passes. If the work for the media they get them from their employer I assume. But how do freelance photographers get theirs?

By being on a freelance assignment for somebody who gets them, or like many things, they're there because they know somebody who hooked them up.

Actual Press passes are issued by newspapers, magazines, and other medias. In order to obtain one, you will have to find an organization that will issue one to you. Good luck on that! There IS an organization that's been around for decades called the International Photographers Organization, I believe. It advertises in most amateur photo magazines, and maybe even online. The jest of it is - You pay a membership fee, and you will receive ID credentials showing you are a member of IPO, which includes a Press pass. I have a friend who did this years ago so she could photograph at pop concerts. She was able to get in, so it worked for her. But press pass or not, the Event has the final say on whether you get in or not. Michael H. Cothran www.mhcphoto.net

with that you might as well make your own press id with your printer and save your money.

Not quite that simple, Gregory. You have to get prior approval from an event to photograph it, and most events will want to know with whom you are associated. IPO has credence with many magazines, and will validate your credibility IN WRITING to a specific event if you request. Who's gonna do that if you fake one on your printer?? Michael H. Cothran

No kidding you need prior approval. Not as simple as a membership fee away from going into anywhere you want either. You may be able to use that to get into small events, nothing major.

carl, if you hang most of you're equipment around your neck you can get into a lot of local events, and just give a simple wave, you're in. I have no creditials, but have gotten some great pics.can't use them,no release.but I use them to compare to others work.i'm a public student!i'm a thief, and aloser.but only at my expense.i do not abuse the system , I use it.for my fee,i give people at the event a free picture, and my business card.i do want to make a living at this, but for now a few t-shirts and passes work just fine.

The classes may be a cornicopia of usefulness, but that press pass would be the same as the international press pass.
