Star Trails Reducing noise, crisp silhouettes

I was shooting in New Zealand, at the base of Mt. Cook trying to get a crisp silhouette and star trails. When I got the slides back, the back ground noise and somewhat fuzzy ridge line ruined the shot I pictured in my mind. I tried to use basic Photoshop correction but the noise in the night sky made any lightening useless.

I need tips and suggestions to help me work on star trails and crisp silhouettes...onsite tips? Photoshop postproduction suggestions? HELP ME!

Details: tripod, Canon GII, 50mm lens, Provia 100f slide film, cable release, f/4, ~1hr exposure
